Probationary firefighter Melton spent the afternoon practicing on Engine 494. This picture depicts the actions of a 2-person engine company making what is known as a "Blitz" attack with a transition to supporting a building's standpipe system. Also in the picture is Firefighter Murray, who is making the connection to the "FDC", or Fire Department Connection.

We train hard so that we can be proficient in answering the emergency calls.

PHTLS on A shift

PHTLS promotes excellence in trauma patient management through global education of all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care. PHTLS is developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care in your area and decrease mortality. The program is based on a prehospital trauma care philosophy, stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. This may require an approach to the trauma patient that varies from traditional treatment modalities.

PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS providers are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. The PHTLS course is continuously updated and revised to keep up with the advances in the field, ATLS Guidelines and feedback from PHTLS participants.

Although PHTLS originated in the United States, it has evolved and now serves as an international education program available to EMS providers in 33 countries including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

With temperatures predicted to be 90-100 degrees this coming week, the Rainier A shift crew spent part of the morning refreshing on the operation of our "Type VI" brush rig. This small, agile engine has the ability to travel roads and open areas which are ordinarily not able to be accessed by our larger "Type I" fire engines. The forecasted weather drastically increases the liklihood of us being called to fight a wildland fire.
